Further, deeper still, those whose true names are for ever hidden from the world picked up the pattern of vibrations in the ether, and something akin to joy stirred in their fathomless minds. Perhaps soon they would be called upon to feed.

About This Quote

In the book, The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy , a computer says that someone called “The Guide” has a "sad story" about an Oracle. The Oracle is a being that, in the story, can answer any question. However, if that being asks a question it's impossible for anyone to know the answer to. In the book, this is because The Guide has been called upon by The Oracle to feed on its own power source.

This being feeds off the energy from its own knowledge. In this quote from The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy , we have a person who has been called upon by an Oracle and has been asked questions about what lies further down. When he replies with “further down” he is referring to another place that can be reached from where we are now.
